The men in the photo are some of the oil refinery affected people doing charcoal burning(from the wood besides them) in Nyamasoga village,Buseruka subcounty, Hoima district, Uganda. The environment has not been spared from the desperation caused by the delayed compensation and resettlement. The refinery affected people who have been left behind have now resorted to massive charcoal burning because their regular source of income like farming has been stopped. They are being driven by anger, hunger and poverty, to make a quick back from charcoal burning in spite of the dire effect on the environment that they feel they no longer have a duty to protect as it’s no longer theirs.
